The Slutcracker

The Slutcracker at Somerville Theatre

Why see The Slutcracker?

Now In Its 17th Slutty Year

If the age-old story of Clara and her Nutcracker Prince has become a little too predictable or you find yourself falling asleep to the chimes of the 'Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy' then perhaps it's time to find a new holiday tradition... Serving Christmas realness with a side of naughtiness, Somerville Theatre's burlesque spoof The Slutcracker may just be the answer! Definitely not one for the whole family, the adult-themed holiday show features drag queens, tango dancers, acrobats, belly dancers, ballerinas and hula hoopers in a whirlwind of scintillating and sensual strip-tease, costumes and dances.

What is the story?

Told through the eyes of a grown up Clara, who's now engaged to Fritz, the story begins on Christmas eve, when the couple exchange presents with their friend Drosselmeyer. Instead of the traditional nutcracker, Drosselmayer gifts Clara a sex toy nicknamed The Slutcracker, which comes to life to leads the innocent young woman on a kaleidoscopic sexual awakening through a dreamlike land filled with blossoming desires, dominatrix fantasies, pole dancers, topless fan dancers and synchronised swimmers...

Fun, funny, baudy and upbeat

I can't imagine what the other reviewers expected, and I think maybe one of them didn't see the show at all, based on his "if you want to see a bunch of guys..." remark. There are very few "guys" in the cast, and the night I was there, I think the audience was about 2/3 female. It is a burlesque show, essentially, and that's very popular with women these days...or so my wife told me. There's no full nudity, and the emphasis is on humor, not eroticism. That said, the show is definitely sexy. Just to qualify my comments, I was involved for a couple decades with theatre in Florida, then was a features writer and theatre critic for a major daily newspaper. My wife and I worked together on some shows, and she's an experienced dancer and choreographer. We both liked it. I had trouble deciding how many stars to give it. It wasn't perfect, so I wasn't sure it deserved all five. But I have attended a lot of "flawless" shows that lacked heart. The fifth star is for all the love brought to it. ... Read more
