Discovering New Lands
Nigerian-American playwright Mfoniso Udofia tells the story of a Nigerian couple grappling with the challenges of immigration and cultural identity, in her award-winning play Sojourners. Set in 1970s Houston, the play follows Abasiama and Ukpong, a married couple who arrive in America with big plans to return to Nigeria with college degrees and a world of experience to build a future there. However, when Ukpong becomes captivated by American culture, Abasiama is forced to question her place in this new world, caught between her commitment to tradition and her dreams.
Directed by Dawn M. Simmons (K-I-S-S-I-N-G), Sojourners balances humor and personal struggle, exploring the challenges of forging a new path in a foreign land. Winning the Edgerton New Play Award when it was first performed, don't miss its return.
