Boston Lyric Opera - Carousel

Boston Lyric Opera - Carousel at Emerson Colonial Theater

Why see Boston Lyric Opera - Carousel?

Rodgers And Hammerstein Masterpiece

Rodgers and Hammerstein's second collaboration after Oklahoma! is one of the best-loved and celebrated Broadway musicals to hit the stage. Based originally on Ferenc Molnar's 1909 play Liliom, the 1945 musical adaptation opened on the Great White Way to instant critical and audience praise. It has enjoyed several revivals both in the US and in London's West End; this production spearheaded by Anne Bogart marks the 80th anniversary of this absolute classic!

What Is The Story?

The story of Carousel follows two couples in their pursuit of love, but mainly focuses on the endeavours of fairground worker Billy Bigelow. Working the carousel for the widowed and jealous Mrs Mullins, he falls for the innocent Julie Jordan, who is visiting with her friend Carrie. Their encounter manages to upset both of their bosses, who fire them. Carrie in the meantime is newly engaged and loved-up with Enoch.

After marrying, Billy and Julie settle into an impoverished life, which leads to domestic violence. Billy is tempted to carry out a robbery in order to better his circumstances, which leads to devastating consequences for Julie and their unborn child. Meanwhile, Carrie's fiance cruelly finishes with her when he sees another man flirt with her. Billy is given one final chance by the Fates to right the wrongs in his life and make good on the promises he made to his family.

Featuring the heartbreaking songs "If I Loved You," "June is Bustin' Out All Over," and "You'll Never Walk Alone" this musical masterpiece will prove once and for all why Richard Rodgers considered this his finest work.
