Why see Boston Ballet - Carmen?

A Female Forward Ballet Program

Boston Ballet's resident choreographer Jorma Elo is a visionary dance maker in constant hot demand. His captivating kinetic spin on Georges Bizet's Carmen takes pride of place in this female forward program, which also showcases George Balanchine's Serenade, the balletmaster's first ever piece created in America for his fledgeling students and American contemporary choreographer Helen Pickett's Tsukiyo, stunningly intimate duet based on the Japanese fable of the Woodcutter's Daughter.

Elo reimagines Bizet's heart wrenching tale of love, passion, jealousy and betrayal for the 21st century, where Carmen isn't a feisty cigarette factory worker but a feisty supermodel. In a fantasyland of haute couture, she is one corner of a love triangle between herself, Don Jose the businessman and race-car driver Escamillo. Elo's electrifying choreography ramps up the ante, adding to a dangerous bubbling cauldron of tension and desire.
