David Sedaris

David Sedaris at Boston Symphony Hall

Why see David Sedaris?

Wickedly Witty

Known for pulling at the threads of familiarity, Sedaris specializes in poignant comedy that is often mined from his unconventional childhood in North Carolina, his wildly varying stream of jobs, and his move to France with his partner. Never afraid to reveal personal anecdotes to audiences, his 2018 book, Calypso was a darkly comic collection of semi-autobiographical essays. A Grammy Award-nominated humorist, writer, comedian, bestselling author, and radio contributor, his laconic wit and delivery have ensured his place as one of America's best observant comedians and keenest students of the human condition.

His comic debut came about in 1992 when he recounted his strange-but-true experiences of being a Macy's holiday elf in his piece, "Santaland Diaries" on NPR's Morning Edition. A regular contributor to BBC radio, his reminiscent stories about his childhood that features his sister Amy (Sedaris), strikes a chord with many of his listeners. He and Amy are also frequent collaborators in creating stage shows, under their joint company, "The Talent Family".

Loved It.

I am so glad I bought a ticket to see him... I had tears (of laughter) streaming down my cheeks throughout some of his material. I was sorry to read a couple of the comments from other audience members that mentioned they were unable to hear him well; when he initially started speaking, I, too, struggled a bit to hear him, but I think the sound crew made an adjustment... not a significant one, but just enough that I wasn't straining to hear him; I would have gotten up and gone directly to the sound board to let them know if I wasn't able to, and it's too bad they didn't. The writer who opened for him was wonderful, and I'm now trying to locate her name on the internet; her writing had me crying I was laughing so hard one moment, to weeping from sadness, and all within the space of 5-10 minutes -- that's a powerful skillset she has. I had a wonderful time at this performance, and I look forward to his return to Boston in the years to come! :) ... Read more

Sedaris Spot On! Sound System Poor Quality!

Boston Symphony Hall, seat location, second balcony right, seats 38 & 39 A (Basically front row of second balcony, center) David’s performance was on point! Criticisms of site lines one has to take lightly since the venue is a concert hall. The unfortunate situation, that really detracted from the performance, was the horrible sound system. For the first half of the performance, one could barely understand one out of every three words, the volume needed to be much higher just to hear the show clearly. ... Read more

David Sedaris

While I have been a fan of his books forever and have enjoyed watching him through clips from media coverage, I wondered what will he do on stage live? Will he read from his various books, take questions from the audience? Who cares I thought just go...well it was a spectacular, engaging, thought provoking evening filled with so much deep burst out laughing, gasps of OMG did he just say that??? and moments laced with tenderness. I absolutely LOVED the whole evening. He is brilliant and has such a wonderful combination of skills, with a gigantic capacity to touch the human spirit. Highly recommend. ... Read more
