Debuting on Broadway in 2001, Urinetown: The Musical took the art of satire to brazen new heights with its critically-lauded skewering of capitalism, the legal system, bureaucracy and politics. Running for three years and garnering three Tony Awards, the riotous musical now comes to Boston, performed by the students of Emerson College's stage productions.
Poking fun at social injustices as well as itself (clearly parodying big Broadway hitters like The Threepenny Opera and Les Mis), the story is set in a dystopian future, where a twenty-year drought has taken hold. Because of the water shortage, private toilets are illegal, and the public ones are controlled by a big brother-esque corporation. If you pee without paying up, you're sent to the infamous Urinetown...
