WERE WE WATCHING THE SAME SHOW?
I just saw this show and thought is was fantastic. In reading the reviews, I was mystified and asked "were we watching the same show"? No, it wasn't a literal interpretation but it caught the essence of the strong, very complex individual of Katherine Hepburn. I loved watching Fay Dunaway and seeing her weave this into a cohesive psychological profile!
Fabulous
Wow! What a treat. Who knew there was so much sadness in Hepburn's life. And Faye Dunaway rolled out the story in a gripping way. I gave it four stars because 1. I wanted it to be longer - the story was so riveting and entertaining running the gamut of emotions I was left wanting more. 2. I agree with the other reviewer that there were inconsistencies with the cane, but I don't put that on Ms. Dunaway as much as the director. Ms. Dunaway was brilliant and it was such a treat to see her perform live. Holding down a show as the only character and talking for 75 minutes while portraying tons of emotions is very hard to do - and she did it amazingly well. Woohoo!
Oh my.
I wanted to love this. But, alas. No. It's not ready for Broadway - and should not go. Maybe off broadway in an intimate theater. Very small, a few hundred seats, no more. If you are far away, why bother to go? Was this really the best show for Faye? And, is there even direction? Seriously, it's like the director was afraid to say anything or do anything because she's Faye - and just let her go where she wanted. Movements and blocking made no visual sense or character or dramatic sense - and maybe this script needed to be looked at again - could you have combined the two acts or used something in the first act to make it work better? This did not work as is. And there was no representation or understanding of Katherine Hepburn - which says to all of us "why do this play then if you are not going to do it right?" - Nonetheless, put this play aside and get another play for Faye. We love her and she deserves better.
Boring
I agree completely with the previous review by Ms. Sarles. My only additional comment is that I was bored; the character and the story never came to life.
This Tea will leave a sour taste in your mouth
Ladies and Gentleman, Ms. Dunaway has talent. After all, she won an Oscar. But I do think that the little fellow didn't save her this time round. If Ms. Dunaway knew the text at all, and if she had help with a prompter in her ear, the person on the other side was awful. The director of this play doesn't know basic staging. Ms. Dunaway could well have done this sitting and perhaps only standing one or two times during the performance. An absurd abundance of elementary direction to actor mistakes, amateurish staging, and a lot of stage director's noise, I am very sorry for Ms. Dunaway, at the hands of this director. Audiences in Boston are very forgiving. But do not make the mistake of going to Broadway with this. It will be the end of your career. You will lose the shine in that Oscar as soon you set foot on a Broadway stage with the play like this. Fire the director. Get a new one and some help with the text. You are great Ms Dunaway, but not with this direction.
Disappointing
I was So excited to see Faye Dunaway in this play. The performance overall was terrible, she forgot lines often stumble through her words, and she was sniffing the whole time. Her timing was so off that it was amateurish. Don’t waste your money!
