Author KevinKevin, August 6th, 2024

Playing at Boston's Emerson Colonial Theatre before its big Broadway debut

The Queen of Versailles is a new musical inspired by Lauren Greenfield's astonishing documentary. This production reunites celebrated Academy Award-winning songwriter Stephen Schwartz with Tony and Emmy Award winner Kristin Chenoweth, who stars as Jackie Siegel. Co-starring Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham as David Siegel, the musical features a book by Lindsey Ferrentino (Ugly Lies the Bone, Amy and the Orphans) and direction by Tony Award winner Michael Arden (Parade, Once on This Island). The Queen of Versailles delves into the true cost of fame, fortune, and family. So, what did the critics think?

Critic Reviews of The Queen of Versailles

"The "Wicked" actress simply dominates the proceedings from beginning to end, almost never leaving the stage and emanating a level of energy from her 4-foot-11 frame that you simply cannot comprehend without experiencing it in person. She's like a neutron bomb of charisma." - Boston.com

"One of the show's big thrills is just watching Chenoweth and Abraham, who have so much chemistry and charisma they (nearly) make one feel sorry for the pair. Another is witnessing the reunion of Chenoweth and Schwartz, who earned their biggest hit collaborating on "Wicked."" - Boston Herald

"Siegel, a woman who angled to build one of the biggest homes in America modeled after the Palace of Versailles, came from humble beginnings. But, she burned with the desire to be and to have much more. And she wouldn't stop until she achieved her goal, no matter the obstacles in her way. Siegel's journey is detailed in the musical "The Queen of Versailles," a lavish undertaking that's funny, heartwarming and comes with a message for all of us trapped in and perhaps enamored by capitalism. The play, with a book by Lindsey Ferrentino and music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, is based on the 2012 documentary by Lauren Greenfield of the same name." - WBUR

"Kristin Chenoweth Shines in a Lavish New Musical With a Social Satire Bite" - Variety

"This show is fun with a capital F and Chenoweth knows how to take charge of any audience and keep them with her till the curtain drops. When they say pre-Broadway, boy do they mean that. I think this might just be one of the largest productions I have seen in years with utterly brilliant scenic design by frequent Arden collaborator Dane Laffrey. It helps that the wonderful Emerson Colonial, home to numerous Broadway out-of-town tryouts, has a lobby also modeled off of The Palace of Versailles' Hall of Mirrors." - Theatrely

"Every moment Chenoweth is on stage in "The Queen of Versailles" she commands our attention - not only as Jackie Siegel, the woman obsessed with conspicuous consumption at the center of this new musical, but also as herself: a musical theater diva capable of stunning us with both her vocal prowess and comic timing." - Boston Globe
