Jagged Little Pill

Why see Jagged Little Pill?

Directed by Diane Paulus

Please note, Jagged Little Pill will not be showing on Friday, June 8th at 2:00PM and Saturday, June 9th at 7:30

90s kids rejoice, because Jagged Little Pill is now a musical. Debuting at ART, this show delves into the themes of the album to tell the story of a modern family dealing with issues of race and gender. Alanis Morissette herself is a close collaborator on the project, working alongside Oscar winner Diablo Cody (Juno), who has written the book. The score, arranged by Next to Normal's Tom Kitt, is comprised of songs from the album as well as other material from throughout Morissette's career, and Tony-winner Diane Paulus (Hair, Pippin) directs.

The Album that Defined an Era

Outside of Nirvana's Nevermind, there wasn't an album which impacted American music in the 90s as much as Jagged Little Pill. A complete break from Morissette's first two records of Madonna-inspired electro-pop, it was a grungey burst of angst and frustration, co-written by lyricist Glen Ballard. Containing the tracks 'Ironic,' 'You Outta Know,' and 'Hand in My Pocket,' it proved a monumental commercial and critical success, earning five Grammy Awards and going on to sell more than 33 million copies worldwide.

Saw this in Boston.

I saw this show in Boston and it was incredible. The original cast was amazing. Lauren Patten was a powerhouse who brought the audience to a standing ovation in the middle of the show. If the new cast is remotely as good as the old one it will be an incredible production. ... Read more

Powerful, real and nostalgic

I read the reviews before going to the show and was kind of worried. A lot of them said the play was disjointed and too dark. I think they missed the point and maybe had never actually listened to the album because it’s about rage, relationship conflict, and self discovery. I also have been to a fair amount of plays and I think this was the best play I have seen in a long time. The singers were incredible, the story line fluidly fit in the songs in a moving way, they had a great balance between heaviness and humor, there was a live band on stage, the choreography was amazing and helped convey a lot of the story line and raw emotions, and it brought up relevant topics that have touched many of our lives. Also if you grew up in the 90s it really takes you back. Expect to laugh, cry, and want to sing along. The one critique I will agree with is that there were some parts where it was hard to hear the words over the music. ... Read more
