Why See Opening Night at Tanglewood?
kicking off the season
Musical Director Andris Nelson leads the Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Tanglewood Festival Chorus and a smorgasbord of special guests in a recital of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No.2 Resurrection, a glorious meditation on the power and the beauty of the afterlife, a theme Mahler returned to often during his career.
Composed between, The Resurrection Symphony was the composer's most successful work in his lifetime and was the first of his works to focus on the afterlife. Speaking of his inspiration, he commented that 'it struck me like lighting'. Fusing poems and hymns with his trademark detailed melodies and flourishes of passion he takes the audience on a journey from a funeral, through the bittersweet memories of life, to the exploration of the next plain.
